I made my first national television debut… sort of, kind of. I say “sort of” because I was technically in the crowd outside of NBC New’s studio when Boy George sang with Culture Club on the TODAY Show. I know I wasn’t necessarily interviewed on national television and I was probably on television for a millisecond, but I had so much fun. I was singing and dancing in the crowd of super tall people while our students did their best to push their way to the front and reach for TODAY Show swag.
Midway through the UFO-moving camera and the screaming crowds, I had teacher responsibilities to take one of our students to the restroom. When we went into the NBC News building, it was a complete contrast to the loudness outside. The loads of security guards were uncomfortably quiet and I felt like were in trouble just for walking around and looking for the restroom. We passed the NBC offices and all the dressing rooms for the special guests (Hillary Swank, Penn & Teller, and Culture Club). On top of the excitement of just being within reach of the dressing rooms, we saw Culture Club just hanging out in the lobby area as we walked out of the building. I may have missed a bit of the show, but I would not change my experience for anything. Someday when I have my real debut on national television, I will be sure to write about it here. Until then, I’m just a dancing speck on the screen enjoying life and it’s little twists and turns.
