My Half-Year Anniversary in Corporate

Friday 02 February 2018

I started this blog simply talking about my day, but it turned into a whole gratitude post about where I am in my life and the fact that it’s my seven month anniversary at the company I work with. In my eyes, seven months is something to celebrate — considering I’ve worked with some tough professional situations over the last few years. For seven months, I’ve osmosis’ed into this global engineering company and made a home for myself… so, yes, I’m damn proud.

Non-Profit to Freelance to Corporate

I’ve been in the workforce since 2010, but working in corporate is a new journey for me. Every industry I’ve worked in and experience I’ve accumulated (whether it’s in technical writing, marketing, leadership, photography, startup businesses, sales in boutiques, warehouse shipping, self-proprietorship, freelancing… the list goes on and on) has been the exact stepping stones I needed to thrive as much as I am currently thriving in corporate. To anyone who is currently building a career, know that you can learn and take from every job you’ve been in. Hell… I used to clean baby throw up and poop in the restrooms when I worked at a swim school… and even then, in that job, I learned the value of cleanliness.

Like theย Four Agreements states,ย always do your best. Under any circumstance, whether you’re a manager of a team, or someone greeting people at a front desk, do. your. best. And I promise, good things will follow.

A Non-Typical Friday

Since I already wrote about my day, I’ll just chuck it in this blog. Today was a โ€œPโ€ day consisting of people, photography, PMs โ€“ also known as project managers, projects in resumes, portraits, Panda Inn, parking ease, and playlists. I went out to the Ontario office to take headshots, and left with a full belly of Panda Innโ€™s Chinese food.

Empty Chair - Photography

The photo above is of my little make-shift studio. Whenever possible, I like to use natural light over studio lights for headshots. Itโ€™s less harsh and more comfortable for the person sitting in the โ€œheadshot chair.โ€

Why was I in Ontario?

On occasion, I’m sent off to different offices. Sometimes it’s for photos, other times I’m summoned for meetings to discuss the current project I’m working on. The tasks and office locations vary, but the fun of being in a different office and meeting lots of new people in one sitting never gets old.

I was in Ontario because I was specially requested to go out and take photos of the project managers on the infrastructure team at our company. Of course I said โ€˜yesโ€™ because Iโ€™ll take any opportunity to do what I love (write, photograph, and create content). Look at me in action in the photo below ๐Ÿ˜œ

Onward and Upward, as Huff would say.

Ariana Huffington is my career idol. Onward and upward, as she would say, is my favorite thing to fall back on when I’m at a stalemate at work.

Thinking about how far I’ve come and how far I’ll go with this company, Huffington’s words will stay with me and help me thrive. All good things and all good vibes surround me and I just thought I’d express my gratitude aloud.

My Career Affirmations

I’m all about affirmations. Aside fromย onward and upward, here are a couple of other career affirmations I tell myself: (maybe you could use some for your benefit too!)

  • I am working in a career I genuinely enjoy.
  • Money is now available to me.
  • I deserve to have a successful career, and I accept it now.
  • I pave my own path.
  • I am abundant in success, money, and power.
  • I am able to make smart decisions.
  • I choose what I become.
  • I have the courage to say “no” to things that don’t grow me.
  • I am thankful for each and every person who has contributed to my success.
  • More and more exciting new prospects are on its way to me.

Thank you for continuing this career journey with me. If you have any questions about being a writer, transitioning from freelance to corporate, or any other things career-wise, we can be virtual penpals atย racheltorrelino(at)gmail.com ๐Ÿ’Œ

lots of virtual hugs,
RACHEL
