In Memory of Nanay

Monday 27 November 2017

In the midst of all the wedding planning and happy moments, a very sad thing happened last week. Mark’s grandmother — also known as nanay — passed away. It’s been hard, especially since our upcoming wedding day is on Nanay’s 93rd birthday.

Before Nanay passed away, she had Mark’s dad record a video of her giving her blessing for us to marry. She spoke in Tagalog, and I so wish I was fluent by now so that I could fully understand and translate what she said. It’s okay though, Mark and his parents helped translate it and she basically gave her blessing, talked about getting along to have a great marriage, and children(!)… a son and daughter to be exact.

Nanay’s funeral is this Wednesday, and I’m currently putting wedding plans on the side to help my future mother-in-law with the viewing and funeral service.

On the bright side of all this, I’ve learned a lot more about Mark’s family than I ever have in the last ten years that I’ve known him. I’ve also never held onto the saying, God won’t give us anything we can’t handle, so much until now.

Carrying Out Nanay’s Legacy

Eight years ago, Mark went to his grandma’s 85th birthday party. After the party, Mark took me on our first date and asked me to be his girlfriend. Since then, December 18 has been a day to celebrate Nanay’s birthday and our anniversary.

Our wedding is now our symbolic way of carrying on Nanay’s legacy and life.

love and light,
RACHEY
